We are an established family business of RICS home surveyors with a large knowledge and experience base running through three generations of surveyors. Surveying is what we do and who we are. Our story started at a drawing board in the early 1960s as John Hicks FCIOB, MRICS, started his career as a draughtsman and journey to becoming a Chartered Building Surveyor to the fabric of the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers. Both sons followed into the surveying profession and were joined in 2021 by the next generation.
My wife and I have lived in and around Cranbrook for many years. Our children have attended Cranbrook School, Benenden School and Dulwich Prep. We love to visit the Bedgbury Pinetum and the nearby coast whenever we can.
I started as a building surveyor back in 1998 and worked for a number of London-based firms specialising in Party Wall matters.
# I am a qualified RICS building surveyor educated at Post Graduate level, having attended the University College of Estate Management. I took my original Bachelors degree in design, innovation and engineering with the Open University. I am a member of the Chartered Institute of Building (Chartered Construction Manager) and hold memberships with the Residential Professional Surveyors Association, Institute of Engineering and Technology, Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Education and Training Foundation (qualified teacher). Whilst not a qualification, I am an active supporter of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings and thoroughly enjoying sharing my knowledge to the benefit of my clients whether they are new to the area or simply moving nearby. I am a Chartered Construction Manager, Member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology, Associate Member of the RICS, and am currently an APC candidate in the process of applying to become a Chartered Building Surveyor.
Originally from Blackheath, the family moved to Cranbrook in 1974. I attended Cranbrook School and then studied at Southampton Polytechnic and South Bank University. I have lived and worked in both Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge and moved back to Cranbrook at the outset of the pandemic to help form the company and be closer to family.
In the intervening period I worked in central London for Daniel Smith (now part of Cluttons), Ibbett Mosely Chartered Building Surveyors in Tunbridge Wells, Durley Hill Structural Engineers in Bromley and ran my own building surveyor practice specialising in party wall matters, Garner & Company (Party Wall Surveyors), in Mottingham, near New Eltham.
Other past experience includes commercial and residential agency work and estate management in St John's Wood, London and The Pantiles, Tunbridge Wells. I was a Commons Conservator whilst at Ibbett Mosely and am familiar with Tunbridge Wells and Rusthall Commons.
I hold memberships with The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), The Residential Property Surveyors Association and The Pyramus & Thisbe Society, which concerns itself with party wall related matters. I specialise in party wall matters between and am a member of the Kent branch.
In my spare time I like to explore the local countryside and historic architecture. I am a member SPAB (the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Buildings).
I joined the business on a part-time basis whilst studying for a History/Economics BA (Hons) at the University of York. Upon graduating in 2022, I joined the family business full time as a trainee surveyor and qualified as a Technical member of the Residential Property Surveyors Association in 2024. Having grown up in Cranbrook and volunteered at Sissinghurst Castle, I am particularly interested in local building styles and materials, and helping people to understand and care for their new homes in and around the area of outstanding natural beauty. Outside of work I love to read, travel and visit the theatre. I am also studying towards becoming a Chartered Building Surveyor.
